ITBS — frequently asked questions
The questions parents ask most about the Iowa Test of Basic Skills — what's on it, how it's scored, which level matches your child's grade, and how to prepare. Every answer is checked against the official ITBS standards.
About the ITBS
Which ITBS level is for which grade?
The ITBS is given by level, roughly one level per grade. Level 11 aligns to Grade 5, with levels stepping up as grade increases. Confirm your child's exact level with their school, since placement can vary.
How long is the ITBS test?
It depends on the level and which subtests are given. On representative Grade 5 forms, Mathematics runs about 50–60 minutes and Math Computation about 20–25 minutes; Language is a single combined section. Your school sets the exact administration.
How many questions are on the ITBS?
Counts are representative and vary by form. On Grade 5 forms, Mathematics is about 38–45 questions and Math Computation about 28–32; the Language section covers Written Expression, Spelling, Punctuation, and Capitalization.
Is the ITBS timed?
Yes. Each subtest has its own time limit. The pace is roughly 45–75 seconds per question depending on the section, so pacing practice matters.
Can my child use a calculator on the ITBS?
No. The ITBS mathematics sections are completed without a calculator, so mental math and estimation skills are important.
What is a good ITBS percentile?
Scores are reported as national percentile ranks, so higher is better. Many selective and gifted programs look at roughly the 90th percentile and up, but exact thresholds vary by school and program.
What's the difference between the Mathematics and Math Computation tests?
Mathematics measures reasoning and word problems — knowing what to do. Math Computation measures pure calculation — whether you can do it accurately and quickly — and includes a 'None of these' answer choice.
What is the 'None of these' trap on Math Computation?
'None of these' is a real answer choice. It's correct sometimes, but it's often a distractor — so choose it only after you've re-checked your computation, not because the answer looks unfamiliar.
How is the ITBS scored?
Raw scores are converted into grade equivalents, developmental standard scores, and national percentile ranks that compare your child to a national sample at the same grade and time of year.
How can my child prepare for the ITBS?
Take a full-length, real-format practice test, then review every missed question to understand the specific trap. KirklandPrep's diagnostic surfaces the three weakest skills so practice targets the highest-yield areas.
What does the ITBS Reading test include?
The ITBS Reading test is a single, passage-based section that combines reading comprehension and vocabulary. Children read short passages — typically a story, a nonfiction article, and a poem — and answer best-answer questions on main idea, details, inference, author's purpose, and figurative language, along with vocabulary items on synonyms, antonyms, word parts, and words in context. Representative Grade 5 forms run about 45–55 questions in ~40–50 minutes, with no penalty for guessing.
Is the ITBS the same as the Iowa Assessments?
They come from the same publisher and are closely related; the Iowa Assessments is the successor to the ITBS. Confirm which your school administers, as formats can differ slightly.
ITBS Level 11 · Grade 5
Level 11 practice →Is ITBS Level 11 the same as fifth grade?
Almost always. Level 11 is built around fifth-grade standards, which is why most schools give it in Grade 5. Placement can vary, so confirm with your child's teacher if you're unsure.
How long does ITBS Level 11 take?
It depends on which sections your school gives. Plan on roughly 50–60 minutes for Mathematics and 20–25 for Math Computation; Language runs as one combined section. The school sets the exact timing.
How many math questions are on Level 11?
On a typical form, Mathematics runs about 38–45 questions and Math Computation about 28–32. The counts shift a little between editions.
Why do fifth graders lose the most points on Math Computation?
Two reasons. The pace is quick — closer to 45 seconds a question — and the “None of these” choice punishes anyone who second-guesses a right answer. Careful arithmetic beats speed here.
Can my child use a calculator?
No. Both math sections are done by hand, so it's worth practicing mental math and estimation.
What's the best way to prepare for Level 11?
Sit a full-length section, then go back through every miss and name the exact mistake. Our free diagnostic does that for you and points to the three skills that will move the score the most.
What's on the ITBS Level 11 Reading test?
It's one passage-based section that mixes reading comprehension and vocabulary. Your child reads short passages — usually a story, a nonfiction article, and a poem — then answers questions on main idea, details, inference, author's purpose, and figurative language, plus standalone vocabulary items covering synonyms, antonyms, word parts, and words in context.
How long is the ITBS Reading section, and how many questions?
On representative Grade 5 forms it runs about 45–55 questions in roughly 40–50 minutes — a little under a minute each. Every item has four choices, it's a best-answer test, and there's no penalty for guessing, so your child should answer every question.
