What is the ITBS?

The ITBS is published by Riverside Insights (Iowa Testing Programs, University of Iowa) and measures achievement in reading, language, and mathematics against the Iowa Core / Common Core standards. It is administered by level, roughly one level per grade — for example, Level 11 aligns to Grade 5.

ITBS sections & format

  • Mathematics — Concepts & Problem Solving

Reasoning and word problems across number sense, algebra, geometry, measurement, data, and estimation — testing what to do, not just how to calculate. Representative Grade 5 forms run about 38–45 questions in 50–60 minutes, with no calculator.

  • Math Computation

Pure calculation with whole numbers, fractions, decimals, and mixed operations — about 28–32 questions in 20–25 minutes on representative forms. Watch the 'None of these' answer choice, a classic ITBS trap.

  • Language

A single combined section covering Written Expression, Spelling, Punctuation, and Capitalization. Many items end with a 'No mistakes' choice that is itself a trap — choose it only after checking every other part.

  • Reading (Comprehension & Vocabulary)

A single passage-based section that mixes reading comprehension (main idea, supporting details, inference, author's purpose and tone, and figurative language) with vocabulary (synonyms, antonyms, prefixes/suffixes/roots, and words in context). Representative Grade 5 forms run about 45–55 questions in ~40–50 minutes — four choices, best-answer, with no penalty for guessing.

How the ITBS is scored

ITBS results are reported as raw scores converted to grade equivalents, developmental standard scores, and national percentile ranks. KirklandPrep's free diagnostic gives an honest, criterion-referenced readiness band and pinpoints the three weakest skills to fix first; a national-style percentile is shown only once a form has enough real attempts to norm fairly.

How to prepare for the ITBS

The highest-yield preparation is full-length, real-format practice paired with review of every wrong answer. KirklandPrep's Wrong-Answer Lessons name the exact trap behind each miss and correct the misconception, so the same mistake isn't repeated.

FAQ

ITBS — frequently asked questions

Which ITBS level is for which grade?

The ITBS is given by level, roughly one level per grade. Level 11 aligns to Grade 5, with levels stepping up as grade increases. Confirm your child's exact level with their school, since placement can vary.

How long is the ITBS test?

It depends on the level and which subtests are given. On representative Grade 5 forms, Mathematics runs about 50–60 minutes and Math Computation about 20–25 minutes; Language is a single combined section. Your school sets the exact administration.

How many questions are on the ITBS?

Counts are representative and vary by form. On Grade 5 forms, Mathematics is about 38–45 questions and Math Computation about 28–32; the Language section covers Written Expression, Spelling, Punctuation, and Capitalization.

Is the ITBS timed?

Yes. Each subtest has its own time limit. The pace is roughly 45–75 seconds per question depending on the section, so pacing practice matters.

Can my child use a calculator on the ITBS?

No. The ITBS mathematics sections are completed without a calculator, so mental math and estimation skills are important.

What is a good ITBS percentile?

Scores are reported as national percentile ranks, so higher is better. Many selective and gifted programs look at roughly the 90th percentile and up, but exact thresholds vary by school and program.

What's the difference between the Mathematics and Math Computation tests?

Mathematics measures reasoning and word problems — knowing what to do. Math Computation measures pure calculation — whether you can do it accurately and quickly — and includes a 'None of these' answer choice.

What is the 'None of these' trap on Math Computation?

'None of these' is a real answer choice. It's correct sometimes, but it's often a distractor — so choose it only after you've re-checked your computation, not because the answer looks unfamiliar.

How is the ITBS scored?

Raw scores are converted into grade equivalents, developmental standard scores, and national percentile ranks that compare your child to a national sample at the same grade and time of year.

How can my child prepare for the ITBS?

Take a full-length, real-format practice test, then review every missed question to understand the specific trap. KirklandPrep's diagnostic surfaces the three weakest skills so practice targets the highest-yield areas.

What does the ITBS Reading test include?

The ITBS Reading test is a single, passage-based section that combines reading comprehension and vocabulary. Children read short passages — typically a story, a nonfiction article, and a poem — and answer best-answer questions on main idea, details, inference, author's purpose, and figurative language, along with vocabulary items on synonyms, antonyms, word parts, and words in context. Representative Grade 5 forms run about 45–55 questions in ~40–50 minutes, with no penalty for guessing.

Is the ITBS the same as the Iowa Assessments?

They come from the same publisher and are closely related; the Iowa Assessments is the successor to the ITBS. Confirm which your school administers, as formats can differ slightly.
